YATES COUNTY--A notice posted online about the condition of a railroad crossing in the town of Starkey generated larger comments about what to do when road conditions near the tracks deteriorate. The extreme cold this year, combined with a number of snow events have made many area roads worse than usual as temperatures warm up. Two problematic track areas are on Dundee-Glenora Road in Starkey and on Hollister Street in the village of Dundee.
Town of Starkey Highway Superintendent Fred Cratsley explained that complaints regarding the crossing must be directed to Norfolk Southern. The crossing on County Route 44 (Dundee-Glenora) is 505 857K. The one in the village is 505 854P. The number to call is 1-800-453-2530 for crossing gates, signals and rough crossings. The emergency number is 1-800-946-4744 to reach Norfolk Southern’s 24-hour police department line.
“We are asking everyone to call, the more complaints they receive, the hope is that they will put this on the top of their priority,” said Cratsley.
