Vandalism mars pavilion project

DUNDEE—Vandals damaged newly poured concrete at the Spring Street park August 14.
At the August 25 meeting of the village board, Mayor Fred Cratsley Jr. said one of the two adolescents involved pled guilty to being involved and the family of the youth who caused the damage has agreed to pay for repairs. Cratsley said about one third of the new concrete floor in the pavilion was involved and the village is getting quotes for the needed repairs. Trustee Greg Wright said he would like to see the kids work it off and Cratsley responded, “One is working 20 hours of community service and the other one, five hours.”
Streets Superintendent Andy Howell asked if charges were issued and Cratsley said that was left up to the village; either charges or the family to pay for the damage. Cratsley said the village is trying to get opinions from area contractors regarding the correct way to effect the repairs.
The concrete floor in the pavilion was a portion of a project that Boy Scout Jack Jayne worked on for his Eagle Scout badge.
In other business:
• Communication was discussed during the August 25 meeting of the Dundee village board; specifically communication among village employees and in particular those who work in the streets department. In July, Howell spoke to the board about his concern that employees had no way to communicate in case of an emergency. During the past month He has gathered information on cell phones and radios for workers. Howell said better communication would not only aid the crew in their work, but also would be useful now that the village is starting to work more with surrounding townships. Cratsley said, “I feel as a village we have a communication issue. We have a responsibility to our workers.” The plans the village is studying would limit use of the phones.
• Howell asked the board to review the list of trees that need to be removed. He said there are five trees in the cemetery he would like to have cut down. The board approved bidding the tree list out. Work is expected to be done by spring of 2010.
The next meeting of the Dundee Village Board will be at 7  p.m. September 8 in the village hall on Union Street.
