Voters welcome, but not political clothing

FINGER LAKES-The presidential campaign for 2016 has been a popular one with hats, "Deplorables" and "Nasty Woman" t-shirts along with buttons, stickers and other political collectibles.
But county election officials remind voters to leave their politically-themed clothing and accessories at least 100 feet away from any polling place entrance during the hours of the general election Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Amy Daines, Republican Commissioner for Yates County, said there is a part of New York election law that prohibits electioneering. NY Election Law on electioneering states: While the polls are open no person shall do any electioneering within the polling place, or in any public street, within a 100 foot radial measured from the entrances designated by the inspectors of election, to such polling place or within such distance in any place in a public manner; and no political banner, button, poster or placard shall be allowed in or upon the polling place or within such one hundred foot radial. (N.Y. Election Law ยง 8-104(1))
Daines said, "We will ask people to cover-up political t-shirts or remove pins and hats."
For the election, Daines said she expects a larger voter turn-out than normal. "We may get to 95 percent of registered voters turning out for this election," Daines said.
The 2012 presidential election in Yates turned out 70 percent of registered voters. The number was 71 percent in Schuyler county for 2012.
Candidates for all offices up for election are listed on the Board of Election websites for all area counties along with a complete list of polling places and hours.
John Vona, Schuyler County Board of Election Commissioner, said, "Just get out and vote!"
