Production company performs 'Rent' in Odessa

ODESSA--Dream Barn Productions will be performing the musical "Rent" this weekend, running three days from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 2. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Shows will take place at the former Catharine Methodist Church at 4991 County Road 14 in Odessa.
The production is being directed by recent Odessa-Montour graduate Manley Gavich, who is also the show's choreographer. Gavich will also be playing the role of Roger in the show. The cast features a group of 15- to 22-year-olds who took a trip to New York City in May in order to learn more about their roles.
Tracy Gavich said the cast spent a day in the Lower East Village where "Rent" takes place. She said they were able to explore the area, the people, attend an arts festival and experience a protest while they were there. Tracy also mentioned the performers had a workshop while they were there with a current Broadway actor in "Mamma Mia!"
Set in the early 1990s, "Rent" details the struggles of a group of New Yorkers as they face challenges with their careers, relationships and the effect of the AIDS epidemic in their community.
