Yates take back drug event nets 100 pounds
PENN YAN--The Yates County Sheriff's Department participated in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) National "Take Back" event Saturday, April 29, collecting expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. Seventy-two participants dropped off 100 pounds of prescription drugs during the four-hour collection period. In addition, more than 300 pounds of drugs were taken from receptacles at the Yates County Public Safety Building, Starkey town hall and Rushville village hall during the past few months. All drugs will be taken this week to the DEA for destruction. Sheriff Ron Spike said, "I thank the officers assigned to the detail and also our community for the great response to take-back meds as our goal to prevent increased pill abuse, misuse and theft, while addressing vital issues of public safety, public health and looking out for the environment, was successful." Take back receptacles remain available at the Public Safety Building, the Starkey town hall and Rushville village hall daily.
