Penn Yan will install new playground by September

PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Central School District is replacing the elementary playground and has donated the old equipment to the village.
Roger Lewis, assistant superintendent of business for the district, explained the old equipment was taken out about three weeks ago.  Workers are putting the new equipment in now.  The new playground will be completed by the 2012-13 school year.  He said the work is part of several other improvements happening now, including plumbing repairs and new bleachers.
The Penn Yan Parent Teacher Group has been raising funds to replace the old playground equipment since last year.  Donations have come from various drives and events, including the Tony Collins Foundation, which held its annual golf fundraiser, July 19 and 20.  Lewis said the group raised a total of $24,000.  The total project costs $96,000.
Brent Bodine, Penn Yan director of public works, said the village was contacted by the school to see if they were interested in accepting the old equipment.  He said the village did and will use it in the future as necessary.  Bodine explained Penn Yan is in charge of six playgrounds throughout the area.  The elementary’s equipment will be used to either replace or repair the existing pieces.
